"The podium and 仕合 (happiness)"In modern times, influenced by the sports game (Olympic Games), the character "shiai試合" (match) is used, but in Budo, the character "shiai仕合" (match) still remains.
In the Nara period (710-794), "shiawase" was written as "為合”shiawase." It is a Japanese word that was created with the meaning of matching the flow of fate (heaven).
In the Muromachi period (1336-1573), the character "仕合shiawase" (match) came to be used. Just as "仕合shiawase" was written as people facing each other with 刀swords, it means that "bonds" and "relationships" with people can bring "仕合shiawase (happiness).
"Therefore, while "winning and losing" exists like in Western sports, the essence of Budo is winning and losing within one's own mind, and the standing is equal. This is one of the reasons why the difference between the top and bottom of the podium does not exist in Japanese Budo. Therefore, when practicing cheering, you must stand up straight, take off your hat, and be polite.
