「現代武道」と「古武道」と分けるのは、間違い。

文部科学省は、明治を境に現代武道と明治以前の武道を古武道としているこれは、歴史的に言っても間違いで１６００年代に大道寺友山により「武道初心集」が出されている。武道＝武士道の訓えの書である。また、葉隠武士道もこの時代に山本常朝によりまとめられている。剣道においても柳生新陰流では、竹刀（袋竹刀）が登場し江戸時代には、防具と現在の竹刀が誕生し北辰一刀流は、現在の剣道と非常に近いものとなっていた。安全性においても現在の柔道や剣道、空手道のような競技性が少なく「形」が主流だったため死亡けが事故がはるかにおこる可能性が少なかった。大正時代まで剣道は、撃剣！柔道は、柔術（拳法）呼ばれることが多かったが大日本武徳会に奨励より柔道、剣道と呼ばれるようになっていった。

　武道の「礼法」においても武士・武道の礼法が室町時代に確立した。小笠原礼法が武士・武道の礼法として確立され現在の礼法に基本となった。この様に歴史的にみて明治時代を境にして「現代武道」と「古武道」と分けるのは、間違いである。正しくは、室町の武道、江戸時代の武道、明治時代の武道と称するべきである。更に言うと武道は、2000年以上にわたり心技共に継続してきたものでひと筋といっても過言でなく区別はない。

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) defines modern Budo as Budo before the Meiji era, and ancient Budo as Budo before the Meiji era. This is historically incorrect, as Daidoji Yuzan published "Budo Shoshinshu" in the 1600s. Budo is a book of instruction in Bushido. Hagakure Bushido was also compiled by Yamamoto Tsunetomo during this period. In kendo, the Yagyu Shinkage-ryu style introduced the bamboo sword (fukuro-shinai), and by the Edo period, protective gear and modern bamboo swords were born. Hokushin Itto-ryu became very similar to modern kendo. In terms of safety, kendo was less competitive than modern judo, kendo, and karate, and "kata" was the norm, making it far less likely to result in fatal injuries. Until the Taisho era, kendo was all about "gekken!" Judo was often called Jujutsu (Kenpo), but after encouragement from the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai, it came to be called Judo and Kendo.

Even in the "etiquette" of Budo, the etiquette of the samurai and Budo was established during the Muromachi period. The Ogasawara etiquette was established as the etiquette of the samurai and Budo and became the basis for modern etiquette. Thus, looking at history from the Meiji period, it is a mistake to divide "modern Budo" and "ancient Budo." It would be more accurate to call them Muromachi Budo, Edo Period Budo, and Meiji Period Budo. Furthermore, Budo has continued in both mind and technique for over 2,000 years, and it is no exaggeration to say that there is no distinction between them.
