昨日の伊佐見武道教室拳法会（伊佐見協働センター・ホール　毎週木曜日19：00-21：00）

　父兄からの質問：何故、日本の武道は、「乱取り」と言うのに空手では、「組手」というのか？拳法会も「乱取り」です。

　1900年代初頭、空手（当時は唐手）が沖縄の学校教育（体育）に採用されるようになると、大人数へ指導するため、また安全に技術を検証するために、あらかじめ手順を決めて攻撃と防御を行う「約束組手（やくそくくみて）」が考案されました。

「試合」と言う言葉も同じで江戸時代より先は、「仕合（しあい・しあわせ）」が使われていました。お互いに仕合（しあい）ながら自他の向上をはかることにより家族や国を護り幸せを呼びこむ意味があったかもしれません。

 The same applies to the word *shiai試合* (match/contest); prior to the Edo period, the characters used were *shiai仕合* (written with the kanji for "mutual" and "meeting/fortune"—the same characters used for *shiawase*, meaning "happiness"). It was said that by engaging in this kind of *shiai*—mutually striving for self-improvement—one could protect one's family and country while inviting happiness!!

Question from a parent: Why is the term *randori乱捕* (free sparring) used in other Japanese *budo* (martial arts), whereas Karate uses the term *kumite組手*? (Note: Kenpo Kai uses *randori*.)

In the early 1900s, when Karate (then written with the characters for "Chinese Hand") was adopted into the school physical education curriculum in Okinawa, a method known as *yakusoku kumite* (pre-arranged sparring) was devised. This involved executing attacks and defenses according to predetermined sequences, allowing for instruction to large groups and the safe verification of techniques.

The same applies to the word *shiai*; prior to the Edo period, the characters used were *shiai* (implying "mutual meeting" or "fortune"). This may have carried the meaning that by engaging in such *shiai*—mutually striving for self-improvement—one could protect one's family and country while inviting happiness.
